Yes and no. When playing New Super Mario Bros. U or New Super Luigi U, in multiplayer gaming sessions, the players with Wii Remote controllers take control of Mario, Luigi, Blue Toad, Yellow Toad, and Nabbit, while the player with the GamePad enters what is called Boost Mode. This allows the player with the GamePad to aid to the other players by attacking enemies by tapping them on the GamePad's touchscreen, as well as create block platforms, again by tapping the GamePad's touchscreen.
