Connect Wii U to PC Monitor via adapter/converter?

Hello all!

I bought a Wii U today but forgot to ask myself one very important question. Can I connect my Wii U to one of my monitor's ports using some kind of adapter, specifically something like what's in this link here?

Here's the thing. Yes, I do have a TV that I can hook a Wii U into with no difficulties and I'd play my games just fine, no problem. BUT, I have a rather large family, and they have a tendency to turn game consoles into Netflix machines. I do not want my Wii U becoming a Netflix machine.

My PC monitor lacks an HDMI port, it's only got a DVI and VGA port. So I was wondering if I could use something like in the link above to connect my Wii U into my monitor. Simply plug the VGA side into my monitor's VGA port, then take the HDMI end and plug it into my Wii U's HDMI port. But would that even work? Would anything from the Wii U display on the monitor? I just wanted to make sure before I tried spending money on something that simply wouldn't work and was even curious if someone has done something like this before.
