Re: New update with support for Dolby Digital 5.1 audio

Dobly 5.1 DOES work with Turtle Beach/Tritton headsets, under these conditions:

1) You have a game that specifically supports Dolby 5.1, like Sonic Lost World.

2) You have a Toslink extractor from an HDMI input.  Monoprice sells them, and Ebay sells them.

I was able to echolocate the apple juice boss without having an LPCM 5.1 device.

I've seen a device on Amazon from some Chinese company going for $125.  I aassume it lets you convert LCPM 5.1 to Dolby 5.1 (I'm not sure, hence why I'm hesetant to buy it.)

I bet you that the hardware is powerful enough to convert LPCM 5.1 to Dolby 5.1 and do it in the operating system,  If that's the case, then a paid firmware update can be added for people who have Dobly Toslink suround headsets like a Turtle Beach or a Tritton.    If Dobly would charge $10 for an individual license for equipment on a per-unit basis, then Nintendo can charge $20 for a Dolby Augment and turn any LPCM 5.1 to Dolby 5.1, and save $100 over the cheap Chinese device, becuase you're using the Wii U Hardware to do Dolby 5.1.   As for licensing, Dobly gets paid without upping the charge of a Wii U for those who don't want or need Dolby, or are okay with LPCM.

Finally, to complete the cycle, you need a Wii/WiiU Male to Female TV Port device with a Toslink output, so you can plug Componet, or even S-Video, Composite, or RF into the TV and get surround through your Tritton/Turtle Beach via Toslink.  It also needs to send sound out when hooked up to HDMI so you can listen via Toslink, and watch via HDMI video.  That add on could cost $10-20, and you'd still be 80 bucks cheaper, and probably more reliable than a Chinese LPCM 5.1 -> Dolby 5.1 adapter.

There would be big demand for it from people with Tritton / Turtle Beach headsets.   Becuase lots of surround sound sets decode it and send it to wired speakers, instead of keeping it in Toslink form for Trittons and Turtle Beaches, which meands if you buy a surround device with LPCM 5.1, you STILL ay not get it to your head set, and even if it has Toslink out, another factor is if it decodes LPCM 5.1 to Dolby 5.1 via Toslink.  You can see how hard Nintendo is making it to enjoy surround sound.  And the whole point of surround sound is to get panoramic soundscapes.  And most gamers who need or want that have Turtle Beach or Tritton headsets, NOT SURROUND SOUND SYSTEMS.

And what if you have curious cats who like to chew wires?  These headsets minimize wires and have wires that are easier to replace.
