HDD have gotten pretty cheap. In fact the stores that I've gone in appear to only carry 1TB or bigger desktop/external HDD with the cheapest probably costing about $80ish or so (either Seagate or Western Digital/WD), and this is new. Heck if you look you can get a portable 500GB HDD for around $50 or less, new.

From the sound of it you want an desktop HDD which looks like sites list them as external. These will have a dedicated power supply (need to be plugged in to a power outlet). Something like this is what you'd want: Seagate Expansion 2TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STBV2000100. If you want less, you'll most likely be buying used and possibly even paying an arm and a leg for it. I found that on Newegg for $90 or $80 from a 3rd party seller. These types of HDDs are going to be spendier than a portable drive. Like I said above, probably $50 or so for a portable, you'll just need to get a y-cable.

If you really need to go with 128GB then go flash drive (which Nintendo says is a no-no) or the more expansive Solid State Drive (I'm not sure of Nintendo's stance on these, so I'd probably look into it and if you can't find any statements from them, then just avoid getting a SSD). For about a 128GB SSD you're looking at about $90, again I found it on Newegg. I think you're best bet if you're looking to save money would be to go portable with a y-cable. If you really want something with a dedicated power supply, then your looking at about $70 to $90 for anything from 1TB to 2TB.

I hope this helps.

  1. Is the Wii U compatible with Solid State Drives?
    • To ensure maximum performance between your Wii U and an external storage device, we recommend using a hard-disc drive (HDD) with a dedicated power source (i.e., using an A/C adapter).

Nintendo does kinda recommend an external Hard Drive over the use of the Solid State Drive and Flash Drives, and I personally use the above mentioned Seagate Expansion 2TB HDD and have had no problems with it, nor noticed any slower load times between the disc and digital downloaded video games.
